"Is my dog active?" is a question almost nobody answers accurately about their own pet. So the calculator doesn't ask it. It asks how many hours you walk and play, because time is something you can count.
This page explains where those multipliers came from — including the part where the published evidence runs out and our own judgement takes over.

Two things multiplied together
The daily calorie figure is resting energy (RER) × a factor. That factor is built in two pieces: a base factor from life stage and neuter status, and an activity adjustment applied on top.

Activity adjustment is expressed relative to the 1–2 hour bucket, which sits at the PNA standard of 1.6 for a neutered adult.

Why time, not intensity
Energy spent is intensity × duration. A gentle hour-long walk and twenty minutes of hard running come out in a similar place. So the main axis is total active time, and the high-intensity cases are absorbed into the same rows as an "or" condition rather than being a separate question.
Add walking and play together. If a lot of the time is spent running, pick one row up.

This is why we anchor at the PNA standard of 1.6 and open up the top end, rather than centring on the meta-analysis figure of about 2.0. Some calculators use 2.0 for a "normal" dog. We use the same number — but we put it at 3+ hours a day, which is a very different claim.
The Indian study supports the middle of our range: dogs averaging 45 minutes of daily exercise measured at 103 kcal/BW^0.75, or ×1.47. Ordinary walking, no athletics, already reaching about 1.5.
Where the evidence stops
Treat the buckets as a way of classifying your pet consistently, not as a precision instrument. We would rather say this plainly than let the presence of two decimal places imply an accuracy that isn't there.
Two things we deliberately don't do
- No body-size adjustment. The 0.75 exponent in the RER formula already accounts for the body-surface-area effect. Adding a size correction to the activity factor as well would be counting it twice. A Maltese and a Retriever get the same multiplier.
- No activity adjustment during growth. Growing animals are already at 2–3× RER; multiplying on top of that produces nonsense.
Whatever factor you land on, the closing advice is the same: individual variation reaches ±50%. Re-weigh every two weeks and adjust by 5–10%. The calculator has a weight log built in for exactly that.
